Trataka (Sanskrit: “look, gaze”) is a powerful yogic purification technique (a shatkarma) and a tantric meditation practice that involves concentrating the mind by staring at a single point. This focus can be on a small object, a black dot, or a candle flame. The practice helps to calm the mind, sharpen concentration, and increase mental clarity.
Trataka not only purifies the mind by eliminating distractions but also enhances the connection between the body and mind. As the practitioner gazes steadily at the chosen point, the practice encourages the dissolution of mental chatter and strengthens inner stillness. Over time, it can lead to a heightened sense of awareness, sharpened intuition, and greater self-realization.
In addition to its mental benefits, Trataka is believed to improve eye health, stimulate the third eye chakra (Ajna), and create a deeper sense of inner focus. It is often used as a preparatory practice for meditation, as it trains the mind to remain focused and disciplined.
Trataka can be practiced in a seated position, with the practitioner keeping their gaze fixed on the object without blinking for as long as possible before gently closing the eyes and bringing awareness to the afterimage of the object in the mind’s eye. Regular practice of Trataka can help the practitioner reach higher states of consciousness and bring a sense of calm and clarity to their daily life.
